Mainz confirm talks with Liverpool for forward

Mainz 05's manager Rouven Schroder has confirmed that the club is currently working with Liverpool in order to secure a permanent deal for Taiwo Awoniyi.

Awoniyi has spent the season on loan at Mainz, where has struggled for game time, playing just 11 games, but has been crucial to the club since football's return after the COVID-19 delay.

Speaking on Awoniyi, Schroder said "I am very, very positive about him," adding that "Taiwo never let himself down, always had his head up and the absolute will to improve was never negative. It is a symbol of how team sport works."

"We are in an exchange with Liverpool, that is an open position."

Adding to this, he also said that they are "waiting for the last games", and then they'll "see what the next steps are".

The Nigerian forward was signed by Liverpool for £400,000 in 2015, and whilst he has never played for Liverpool, he has been loaned out to five different teams.

He has enjoyed successful loans spells in Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as some time at FSV Frankfurt in 15/16.
