Nainggolan, midfield masterclass or troublesome distraction?

Inter Milan have released a statement in which is stated that their summer signing, Radja Nainggolan, will be temporarily suspended for disciplinary reasons.

The former Belgian international had several disciplinary issues at his former club Roma, and his trend of getting into trouble with his club has continued, with him being temporarily banned from all football activity at the club for an undefined amount of time.

The club has not yet explained why the Belgian received the suspension, only issuing a short statement which read: "FC Internazionale Milano can confirm that Radja Nainggolan has been temporarily suspended from football activity for disciplinary reasons."

With Inter currently sitting third in the Serie A table and battling to secure themselves Champions League football for next season, this will only come as a distraction.

Nainggolan is clearly a talented footballer, that would probably slot in almost all of Europe's biggest sides, but his troublesome nature has often held him back and got him into several problems off of the pitch. It was reported that the midfielder had a gang that was falsifying his cheques, eventually robbing him of around €150,000.

In an interview last month, he referred to himself as "normal" rather than a "bad boy", yet he has often been criticised for smoking, partying and drinking, a life that is not normally associated with a professional footballer. His habit of smoking and drinking has often been used against him, due to such addictions not allowing football players to perform at their highest potential.

The 30-year-old has also had a difficult time in international football, being left out of this summer's World Cup by Roberto Martinez, after he apparently failed to convince him that he was worthy of a place in the Belgian midfield, even though Nainggolan has performed at club level consistently over the last four seasons.

Whilst he as at Roma, he was dropped after he posted a video of himself drinking and smoking whilst celebrating New Year's Eve. He later on apologised for the act.

The midfielder decided to move away from the capital and go to Inter Milan over the summer, in a deal that was valued around €38 million. Whilst he has shown glimpses of his brilliance in an Inter Milan shirt, he has so far failed to live up to the expectations, and now with this controversial act, his footballing future has been hindered even further.

Whilst Nainggolan's footballing ability is unquestioned, his off-the-field antics have hindered him throughout his career. There are several reports that the reason for his suspension is for repeatedly arriving late to training.
