AS Roma are currently seeking a replacement for Chris Smalling, with the Englishman's loan not being extended as of yet, and they are looking at possibly signing Jan Vertonghen from Tottenham on a free.
The Belgian's contract is set to expire by the end of the this month.
Vertonghen is currently playing his eighth season for Spurs, but with increased competition in defence, as well as the team massively underperforming, he doesn't seem like he is going to sign a new contract.
In Spurs' first game back from the coronavirus break, Vertonghen was an unused substitute during their 1-1 draw against Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Speaking on Vertonghen before the Manchester United game, Mourinho stated that Vertonghen is "committed" to Spurs, and that Spurs "want him to be with us until at least the end of the season and is hopefully Jan and his people and my club can agree that."
Vertonghen has not featured as prominently as he would have liked this season, making just 19 Premier League appearances, three Champions League appearances and four FA Cup appearances, a tally that is very low for a player that has been so important for Spurs throughout the seasons.
