Newcastle United are still interested in signing title-winning Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer, after being interested in him back in January.

According to a report from Portuguese outlet Record (via Sportslens), Newcastle were interested in sealing a deal for Nunes in the January transfer window, and while a move failed to materialise back then after submitting a loan offer with an option to buy, they have gone back in for him.

The Magpies have reportedly reignited their interest in the Brazilian midfielder, and signing him could prove to be a big boost towards their intentions of moving into the top-half of the Premier League next season.

Record are claiming that Sporting will want at least €20 million for the midfielder, who won the Liga NOS title this season, finishing on a remarkable 85 points.

The Brazilian is very highly rated across Europe, and if Newcastle manage to sign him for the reported €20 million fee, then it could be a great bargain as long as he adapts to English football.

Additionally, he also has a lengthy contract until 2025 with Sporting, and therefore the asking price is relatively reasonable since Sporting are not being pressured into selling him right now.

Nunes is quite versatile, being able to operate in an advanced role in central midfield as well, and thus could prove to be a creative spark to Newcastle's attack.

He managed three goals and three assists this season in all competitions, and with experience and the right management, he could go on to thrive in Europe.

Newcastle will have to decide between him and Joe Willock though, as it would not be the best idea to splash out so many funds on two players that play in similar roles, and it all depends on if Arsenal are willing to sell the English midfielder or not.
