Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers believes that towering centre-back Jonny Evans will sign a new contract over the coming days to stay at the club.

The Northern Ireland international joined the club from West Bromwich Albion in 2018, and played a vital role in securing an impressive fifth-placed finish in the Premier League last season.

The 32-year-old's contract ends next summer, and he has been linked with moves to Manchester United and Arsenal, with both of the clubs being keen to improve their options at the back.

Evans won three Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League with United.

"I'm hearing from the club it's pretty close," Rodgers stated, adding that "So we're very hopeful that, very soon, we'll be able to finalise that deal."

"It could be sooner than the new year, we'll have to wait and see. But I know the representatives of Jonny and the club are very close. If it's this year, that's great, if not, it'll be very early in the new year."

Due to injuries to first-choice centre-back Caglar Soyuncu, Evans has often been paired up with new signing Wesley Fofana, and as a result, the Northern Irishman has made 13 appearances in all competitions, helping the side to six clean sheets in all competitions when he has played.

Leicester are currently second in the table, and they will play Manchester United on Saturday, who are currently third in the table with a game in hand.
