Liverpool took to Twitter to announce that one of their defenders won the PFA Player of the Month award for September, but it was not who everyone was thinking.
During September, Liverpool boasted a strong defence made up of Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and the defensive partnership of Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk. Out of all of those names, it was the Cameroonian, Joel Matip that won the award.
Matip played every minute of Liverpool's charge for the title during September, being vital in preserving Liverpool's stunning start to the Premier League campaign, currently standing at a magnificent eight wins in a row.
The other contenders for the award were Manchester City duo Kevin de Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez, Bournemouth star man, Callum Wilson, Leicester City's rampaging full-back, Ricardo Pereira, as well as Arsenal's top performer, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Matip was particularly outstanding in Liverpool's crucial 2-1 away win against Chelsea, earning himself the Man of the Match award, after winning five out of six of his aerial duels, making nine clearances, and completing three tackles.
If Liverpool are to continue their top form, they will definitely need to keep van Dijk and Matip's defensive solidity intact for the rest of the season.
