Forgotten Chelsea midfielder spotted training with Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Reece James

Forgotten man set for Chelsea return training with Loftus-Cheek and James Marco van Ginkel

Chelsea are currently in a spot of bother, with plenty of players still recovering from injuries, including Antonio Rudiger, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Reece James, and also the forgotten man, Marco van Ginkel.

Van Ginkel was spotted training with Loftus-Cheek and James, who are both currently recovering from injuries, with Loftus-Cheek currently recovering from a ruptured Achilles injury which he got during a friendly with New England Revolution at the end of last season.

The Dutchman posted an image on Instagram on exercise bikes with Loftus-Cheek and James, and also with youth goalkeeper Jamal Blackman, as van Ginkel aims to step up his fitness in order to get his chance in the Chelsea midfield.

Van Ginkel spent half of the 2015/16 season, along with the full 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons on loan at PSV, before he tore his anterior cruciate ligament and had to be operated at the start of last season, resulting in him not playing at all for the 24-time Eredivisie champions.

Van Ginkel has not been allocated a squad number for this season and could possibly be set for another loan out or else a permanent deal, but there is the slight chance of him being incorporated into Chelsea's midfield.

The Dutchman captained PSV to an Eredivisie triumph in 2017/18, as he replaced Luuk de Jong as captain, even though he was only a loanee. During that season, the now 26-year-old managed to score 14 goals and provide four assists in just 28 Eredivisie matches, getting voted as Man of the Match on four occasions.

Being a creative midfielder by nature, the Dutchman impressed during all of his loan spells at PSV, but failed to do so when loaned out to AC Milan in 2014/15 and then Stoke City in the first half of 2015/16.

However, now that he has matured and Frank Lampard has to make do with what he currently has at the club, van Ginkel might be in for a second crack at Chelsea's first-team, having made only four appearances for the London club in the past, all of which coming in the 2013/14 season.

With his contract set to expire, it remains to be seen what will be made of the 26-year-old and whether or not he will be utilised by Lampard. Whatever the case, he deserves a second chance at Chelsea for sure.
