Barcelona are currently eyeing 22-year-old Argentine defender Cristian Romero, who is currently on loan at Atalanta from Juventus over a possible move in the summer transfer window.
According to a report from Italian news outlet Calciomercato, Barcelona are in desperate need for a central defender, and they are now looking at Cristian Romero as a possible solution to their problem.
The Catalan giants are currently monitoring the possibility of signing the Argentine, who is rated as one of the most promising young defenders in Serie A.
Romero has made a great impression in Italy, joining Juventus from Genoa in 2019, and he was then immediately loaned back to his former club, before joining Atalanta on loan this season.
This season, Romero has been a very good attacking outlet from the back, scoring three goals and providing four assists in 33 appearances in all competitions, and his progress has caught the eye of Barcelona, who are looking at the chances of signing him in the summer.
Barcelona want to add to their defensive options ahead of the 2021/22 season, especially with Gerard Pique heading towards the end of his career, and with the likes of Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti underperforming, Romero could be a fantastic signing.
Youngsters Ronald Araujo and Oscar Mingueza have impressed, yet they are both still very young and Umtiti is facing an uncertain future at the club, so Barcelona are in need of two centre-backs, with the other transfer option they have on the cards is Eric Garcia, who is set to join them from Manchester City in the summer once his contract expires.
Despite this, signing Romero will not be an easy task, especially since he is currently on a two-year loan at Atalanta, who have the option to sign him permanently.
However, Joan Laporta is still very keen on signing Romero in the coming window, and it looks set to go down to the wire as the 22-year-old gets to choose between Barcelona, Juventus and Atalanta.
