UEFA Super Cup Preview: The Madrid Derby

The UEFA Super Cup will take place today, and the two Madrid sides that will feature in it will be looking to get a hold on their first trophy of the season.

Real Madrid got their place in the UEFA Super Cup after beating Liverpool in the final of the Champions League last season by three goals to one, with the game being remembered most notably for Loris Karius' errors and Gareth Bale's thrilling display, involving an overhead effort that went into the top corner. That Champions League triumph was Los Blancos' 13th in their history, as they continued to dominate the European stage. Real Madrid are the holders of the Super Cup, after beating Manchester United last season.

On the other hand, Atletico Madrid were forced to content with the Europa League, as they crashed out of the Champions League at the first hurdle last season, after being knocked out in the group stages. However, they managed to motivate themselves to reach the final and thrash Olympique Marseille by three goals to nil. Their style of play under Diego Simeone has always been to be resolute defensively and then try to hit teams on the counter, and that worked out to full effect in the Europa League last season.

The two sides fell very short in La Liga last season, yet their European triumphs will make this match a very tightly contested fixture and one that will surely be full of action on both sides.

The question is, who will come out on top? We will know today (Wednesday 15th August) at 9pm (GMT+2), with the match taking place in the A. Le Coq Arena in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia.
